What BYOT Looks Like: A Photo Series

after the #BYOTchat about marketing, the @40ishoracle came up with the idea of the photo essay. We will be posting these photo essays of BYOT at Brebeuf Jesuit on JD's fancy new Pinterest Board

Should we expand this to include more schools? Feedback always welcome :)

  1. To facilitate BYOT schools must give students and staff easy but secure access to the school's applications from various devices (including iPads, iPhones, Android devices and Chromebooks), while minimizing the intervention required by IT staff. An ideal solution for such a scenario is Ericom AccessNow, a pure HTML5 RDP client that enables remote users to connect to any RDP host, including Terminal Server (RDS Session Host), physical desktops or VDI virtual desktops – and run their applications and desktops in a browser. AccessNow works natively with Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer (with Chrome Frame plug-in), Firefox and any other browser with HTML5 and WebSockets support.

Download this white paper to learn how a school district is implementing BYOT by capitalizing on innovative clientless HTML5 technology to empower students using Chromebooks and other devices with quick, browser-based access to Windows applications and virtual desktops.

    1. I want to keep this one up here, because i think it is important for people to know what options are out there for transition and usage. I was able to RDP into my computer from my Transformer Prime (ASUS ships with a solution built in) this weekend to grab some photos that I had inadvertently migrated out of dropbox.

HOWEVER, I think this points to a serious discussion that BYOT schools have to have in thinking about "WHAT BYOT LOOKS LIKE." BYOT is not about shoehorning a windows dekstop experience into an iPAD browser! Imagine what the use case would be for this situation on a regular basis?

If your environment is dependent on PC applications, buy a PC. The best of BYOT is about changing the culture of the classroom so that devices can take advantage of the spectrum of Apps, programs, sites, and skills to demonstrate the objectives which the instructor guides the students through. Variety yields collaborative possibilities.

Don't limit a tablet to an inferior PC-experience
Don't disable apps/cameras/etc. from a misguided need to control.
Don't limit the revolution for want of a safety net.

If you need RDP, look at the options. But first ask yourself why you need RDP.
